Media invited to 'test drive' 2010 Mud Run Course

Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst invites media to participate in a 'test drive' of the 2010 "Beast of the East" Mud Run, Sept. 1, 1:30 p.m., here.

Media will have an opportunity to scout out the terrain, obstacles, dirt hills, water holes and mud pits before the public event on Sept. 11. This year's 10K course is a combination of asphalt, grass, gravel, sand tank trails and of course, MUD!

The day's events will be intense; therefore, all participants must be adequately prepared and properly dressed.

The practice run is open to all accredited media. Interested media must arrive at the Wrightstown gate by 12:30 p.m., Sept. 1.

Media representatives interested in attending must RSVP with the Joint Base Public Affairs Office at (609) 754-2104 no later than 5 p.m., Aug. 31. Please note media without an RSVP cannot participate.

MUD RUN COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Start (.75 miles to first obstacle)
Obstacle 1 Low Crawl I - mud filled low crawl pit 80 ft wide and 60 ft long with 10 ft hills on each side
Obstacle 2 Dragon Teeth - series of two 6 ft tall, 48 ft long triangular obstacles for runners to go over

Mile 1
Obstacle 3 Swamp Drop - approximately 100 yards through naturally occurring swamp; Nasty!
Obstacle 4 Duck and Jump - ¼ mile section of trail where runners jump over or duck under various obstacles

Mile 2
Obstacle 5 Hop Bottom - runners navigate their way through a forested swamp land
Obstacle 6 Marsh Madness - approximately 200 yards through naturally occurring swamp; more Nasty!
Obstacle 7 Life's a Ditch - located in a 500 ft by 500 ft, 20 ft deep gravel pit. Water, up and downs

Mile 3
Obstacle 8 Hurdles - series of 6 plastic Jersey barriers for runners to go over
Obstacle 9 Hamburger Hill - off the tank trail and down an embankment, then back up
Obstacle 10 Ambush Area - propane cannon and small arms fire, smoke grenades

Mile 4
Obstacle 11 Heartbreak Ridge - steep 12 ft rope climb up a wooden obstacle
Obstacle 12 Water Cross - cross the shallow end of Duck Pond
Obstacle 13 Mud Mountain - 20 ft tall hill with mud on each side
Obstacle 14 The Pits - series of 3 ft deep trenches with mud mounds on each side totaling about 100 ft long
Obstacle 15 Low Crawl II -- mud filled low crawl pit 30 ft wide and 60 ft long with 10 ft hills on each side

Mile 5
Obstacle 16 Steeple Chase - series of 4 barriers to hurdle with mud on the drop down side
Obstacle 17 Climb over wall - A 6 ft wall surrounded by mud and a "climb under" wall on each side

End at 6.2 miles
