McGuire AFB to Celebrate ‘Earth Week’ Published April 9, 2008 By 041108 McGUIRE AIR FORCE BASE, N.J. -- -- McGuire AFB will celebrate its inaugural Earth Week event April 21-25. The 2008 theme is "Conserve Resources for a Brighter Future." In light of the need to reduce energy consumption, as energy and natural resources become increasingly scarce, Earth Week at McGuire will highlight energy and resource conservation issues, and ways to reduce the human footprint. Earth Week will start April 21 with the first-ever presentation of the Resource Conservation Award, which will be granted to the McGuire unit that makes the greatest strides in resource conservation. During Energy Awareness Day, April 23, base personnel are encouraged to carpool, ride a bike or walk to work. Several local energy and utility companies will also visit McGuire that day to teach personnel how to reduce energy consumption and save money. Arbor Day will be celebrated April 24, and multiple trees will be planted around base to green the landscape and advocate resource conservation. Wrapping up Earth Week, McGuire and its base housing contractor, United Communities, will team up April 25 for a recycling drive. Awards will be presented to the top-three residences in base housing who pick up the most recyclables and refuse. -30-
