McGuire deploys C-17 squadron

The Air Force's first single-squadron C-17 deployment from McGuire is slated for Aug. 29, when its 6th Airlift Squadron deploys in support of the Global War on Terrorism. During the deployment, the 6th Airlift Squadron will be re-designated as the 816th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron.

"This deployment is unique as C-17 squadrons traditionally deploy from Charleston AFB, S.C., or McChord AFB, Wash, which both have four C-17 active-duty squadrons compared to McGuire's one," said Maj. Eric Moritz, 6 AS director of operations.

The squadron will deploy with other Team McGuire members from the 305th Operations Group, 305th Mission Support Group and the Air Mobility Command Test and Evaluation Squadron. Combined, they will make up the 816 EAS.

"During this deployment, the 6 AS will transition from a mainly U.S.-based strategic operational focus - moving stateside cargo and personnel to overseas transportation and logistical hubs, and concentrate almost exclusively on the tactical side of our mission - providing combat airlift to the front lines of the Global War on Terrorism," added Major Moritz.

While the 6 AS is deployed, mission readiness at home won't be affected. The 732 AS and other C-17 squadrons from around the country will be tasked with the missions normally carried out by the 6 AS.

"This is a great opportunity for Team McGuire to directly support the warfighter," said Lt. Col. Joseph Wolfer, 6 AS Commander.

Since this will be the first extended deployment for several of the squadron members, McGuire Airman and Family Readiness Center community readiness consultant, Erica Zeiger, will also be available to talk about how the Air Force helps family members prepare for and cope with deployments.

Media representatives interested in attending must RSVP with the 305th AMW Public Affairs Office at (609) 754-2104 no later than 4 p.m. Aug. 28 and must arrive at the McGuire main gate by 7 a.m. Aug. 29
