JB MDL Delivers Culture for AANHPI Month

By Airman Simonne Barker 87th Air Base Wing

The Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Heritage Month committee at JB MDL hosted a multitude of events to celebrate the month-long observance of AANHPIH during May. The theme for this year’s observance was “Advancing Leaders Through Collaboration.”

The committee kicked off the month with a cake-cutting ceremony and reading of “A proclamation on Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.” Following the White House proclamation reading, the committee shared traditional candy and cake in celebration of AANHPIH month.

The committee recognized AANHPIH month further with a 5K walk/run at the McGuire Track. Snacks and drinks were provided, as well as medals and t-shirts for those who participated. Additionally, the Fort Dix School Age Program and McGuire Youth Center celebrated a cultural day where they participated in fun activities like hula and origami making.

AANHPIH month concluded with a cultural banquet. The committee shared signature dishes, music, traditional clothing and dances to celebrate and educate members on the importance and impact that AANHPIH has on the history of the U.S. This ceremony highlighted the diversity that contributes to not only the Air Force but to our nation.

“We need to do our part and study the different cultures and take advantage of these opportunities to study the culture whenever it arises,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Jerome Vinluan, Joint Science and Technology Office Medical Director. “I can’t emphasize the importance of celebrating diversity and merging those differences.”
