MHS Genesis

By SrA Faith McIlvaine Joint Base MDL Public Affairs

Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., will transition to a new electronic health record, the MHS GENESIS, which provides a single electronic health record for service members, veterans and their families.

With the MHS Genesis patient portal, patients will be able to securely access their health record information, schedule appointments, check lab and radiology results, request prescription refills, and exchange secure messaging with their healthcare team.

“MHS Genesis provides more than just a patient medical record,” explained Tina Meyers, 87th Medical Group Call Center Clinical Nurse Director. “It provides continuity of care for service members anywhere in the world, at home stations, deployed locations and the Veterans Association.”

Currently, if patients are serviced by another military branch, they may not have access to electronic medical records inputted at a different service branch location. This system transfer may cause a delay in the patient's care, however, this new system is tasked with enhancing the sharing of information between the Department of Defense and external partners to include the VA, U.S. Coast Guard, and many commercial health systems

MHS Genesis will also increase provider to patient interaction time, having the ability to  provide real-time clinical support allowing patients to securely communicate directly with providers.

“MHS Genesis  will allow for faster and better management of chronic, complex, and time-sensitive health conditions as well as provide automated, real-time clinical decision support for health care teams,” said Meyers.

There will be approximately 205,000 DoD medical providers working with a single platform that consolidates patient data and records, improving clinical care regardless of location. This ability to connect medical, dental, inpatient, and outpatient information can increase efficiency for both patients and healthcare professionals.

The joint base hosted a town hall on November 2, to introduce MHS Genesis and answer questions from the JB MDL community.
