How, when to use a fire extinguisher

By Staff Sgt. Ebony Lee 305th Civil Engineer Squadron

Prevention is key when it comes to protecting your home or workplace from a fire. However, fire extinguishers are our first line of defense if a fire starts. The question is, will you know when and how to use a fire extinguisher? Here are 10 important rules to remember when it comes to a fire:

1. Most fires start small and can usually be controlled if attacked with the right size and type of extinguisher within the first two minutes.

2. A fire extinguisher should be "listed and labeled" by an independent-testing laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratory. The higher the rating, the more fire it can put out.

3. Before attempting to fight a small fire, be sure everyone is out of the building and 911 has been called. If the fire starts to spread out of control, get out immediately!

4. Most importantly, you, as the operator, must know how to operate the extinguisher and do it quickly. The directions are listed on the extinguisher. Don't wait until a fire starts to learn how to operate the extinguisher.

5. Before fighting the fire, remember the word PASS

P - Pull the pin
A - Aim the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire
S - Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent
S - Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire until it appears to be out

6. Watch the fire area in case the fire breaks out again and repeat use of extinguisher, if necessary.

7. Always fight the fire with your back to the escape route in case the fire gets out of control.

8. If the fire is spreading too quickly, is too large, or blocks your exit -- get out and close the door behind you.

9. If you have the slightest doubt, get out and close the door behind you.

10. If you need training or practice in the use of portable fire extinguishers, call the 305th CES fire prevention office at (609) 754-3979.
