JB MDL Airman receives acceptance into AF Academy Prep School

By Daniel Barney Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Public Affairs

U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Franz Abagat, 87th Civil Engineering Squadron emergency management specialist, recently received notification that he has been accepted into the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School. The school provides enlisted service members with the academic, leadership and physical skills to prepare them for success as future officers.

“I am honored to be selected,” said Abagat. “The application process and the months of anticipation were a challenging experience, and I’m happy that it was well-worth it.”

The AF Academy Prep School was established in 1961 to offer a select group of enlisted personnel and civilians a pathway to join the Air Force Academy.

“I’ve always had a strong interest in becoming an Air Force officer, but a major concern for me was that I did not possess a college diploma.” said Abagat. “By getting into this school, it could lead to a dream come true.”

Abagat became aware of the AF Academy Prep School as he was attending AF technical training. Since arriving at JB MDL, his first duty station, he has expressed interest in applying for the preparatory school to his supervisor.

“I felt compelled to support his decision and write a letter of recommendation to go along with his application.” said Tech Sgt. Samantha Strege, 87 CES emergency management flight superintendent. “One of the things that I have learned as a non-commissioned officer is to support the goals of your troops. I believe that if he feels something needs to be done, then he gets it done.”

Once Abagat received the news of his selection, he was happy, surprised, and relieved. After expressing his joy, he provided some advice for future Airmen who are interested in enrolling into the prep school.

“Airmen must be prepared for school interviews, practice time management, and trust their leadership in helping them throughout the application process,” said Abagat. “If becoming an officer is your goal, do not be afraid to tell your leadership. They want to help you succeed in achieving that goal.”

Upon completion of the preparatory school, cadet candidates earn consideration and a recommendation from the school commander for an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy.
